How to use Passport Photo Maker

  1. 1Choose the document

    Select the passport or visa type, such as US 2 × 2 in, UK 35 × 45 mm, Schengen 35 × 45 mm or Canada 50 × 70 mm.

  2. 2Add a front-facing photo

Use even light, a plain wall, a neutral expression and look straight at the camera. The tool finds your face automatically.

  3. 3Check the position

With Show guides on, the top of your head should touch the blue line and your chin should sit between the amber lines. Adjust with Zoom and Move sliders.

  4. 4Download and print

Optionally replace the background with white, then press Download photo + 4×6 print sheet. Print the sheet at actual size on 4×6 in (10×15 cm) photo paper.

Passport photos at home, sized correctly

Getting a passport photo taken costs money and a trip out, and photo booths often produce shadows or awkward crops. With a phone and a plain wall you can do it yourself – the hard part is getting the size and head position exactly right. This passport photo maker knows the official dimensions for common documents and positions your face accordingly.

Each option shows a short note with the key rules, such as background colour. Requirements change, so always check the official guidance of the issuing country before you print.

Taking a good photo

  • Background: a plain white, cream or light grey wall with no patterns or shadows.
  • Light: face a window for soft, even daylight. Avoid overhead lights that cast shadows under the eyes.
  • Distance: have someone stand about 1.5 m away with the camera at eye level. Selfies at arm’s length distort faces.
  • Pose: face the camera directly, eyes open, mouth closed, neutral expression. Hair away from the eyes.
  • No hats or tinted glasses; religious head coverings are usually allowed if the face is fully visible.

Positioning with guides

After you add a photo, the tool runs face detection and positions the crop. With Show guides on:

  • The blue line marks where the top of the head should be.
  • The amber lines mark the allowed range for the chin.

If the face isn’t found, or you want to fine-tune it, use Zoom, Move left / right and Move up / down. Reset position returns to the automatic placement.

Replacing the background

If your wall isn’t plain enough, tick Replace background with white. This uses an AI model (about 7 MB, downloaded once) running on your device. Check the hair edges afterwards; for best acceptance, a genuinely plain background is still preferable.

Printing

Press Download photo + 4×6 print sheet. You get the single digital photo – for online applications – and a sheet with several copies laid out on 4×6 in (10×15 cm) paper. Print it at actual size / 100%, not “fit to page”, at home on photo paper or at a photo kiosk, then cut the photos out along the edges. Measure one with a ruler to confirm the size.

Online applications

Many countries now accept digital photos for online renewals. Use the single-photo download, and if the portal has a file-size limit, reduce it with Compress Image. For other ID-style photos with custom sizes, combine Crop Image and Resize Image.

Privacy

Your face is personal data. All detection, editing and printing layout happens in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take my own passport photo at home?

Yes, for most countries. Use a plain light wall, even daylight, no shadows and a neutral expression, and have someone take the photo from about 1.5 m away at eye level.

How do I print the photo?

Print the 4×6 sheet at actual size or 100% (not "fit to page") on 4×6 in (10×15 cm) photo paper at home or at a photo kiosk or pharmacy, then cut out the photos.

What size is a US passport photo?

2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) from chin to top of hair, on a white or off-white background. The digital file is 600 × 600 pixels.

Can I wear glasses?

Rules vary. The US does not allow glasses; many other countries allow them if there is no glare and the eyes are clearly visible. Removing them is the safest choice.

Will the white background replacement be accepted?

It usually works well, but check the hair edges carefully – the tool reminds you to. Some authorities reject photos that look edited, so a real plain background is best.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Face detection, background replacement and cropping all happen on your device.
